A computer that appeared to have reached the end of its useful life is operating again as a video intelligence platform. The case shows how IKFace Edge can use existing infrastructure when workloads and expectations are sized correctly.
From idle computer to artificial intelligence platform
At INFOKRAUSE we wanted to demonstrate something concrete: adopting artificial intelligence does not always require buying a new server or replacing every camera. In the right scenario, a computer that seemed destined to become technological decoration can still perform useful, measurable work.
After Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS was installed, the system was prepared to run IKFace Edge and connect through RTSP/ONVIF to an IP door station in Sardinia. A camera that originally supplied video can now detect events, record information, and generate metrics.
One platform for security and operations
Although this demonstration took place in a home, the same capabilities apply to stores, offices, buildings, condominiums, warehouses, and small branches that already use IP cameras.
Video infrastructure no longer serves only to review recordings after an incident; it also provides real-time information and historical data for decision-making.

Local processing in Italy, centralized management in Chile
IKFace Edge analyzes video locally in Italy, close to the camera, without continuously sending all video to the central server. From Santiago, IKFace Server consolidates health, events, searches, metrics, and administration across multiple Edge systems.
Each location retains local processing while participating in a distributed operation supervised through a single platform.

Lower investment and a longer useful life
Hardware reuse can reduce initial investment, extend the useful life of existing systems, and support pilots or gradual deployments. It also helps organizations use RTSP/ONVIF cameras they already own.
The point is not that any old computer can process any project. The result shows that a correctly sized workload can still deliver useful outcomes from infrastructure that might otherwise be discarded.

IKFace combines existing cameras, local processing, and centralized administration, creating a practical path for organizations that want to start with controlled investment and grow progressively.

It is not always necessary to start from zero. An available computer and a compatible camera can become a solution that generates alerts or metrics, while IKFace Server centralizes and supervises the information from anywhere.
